Seasons are a direct reaction of the environment to the tilt of the earth's axis and its orbit around the sun. The Northern Hemisphere has its hottest times when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the sun (summer time). Winter for the Northern Hemisphere is when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away. Interestingly, then, those living in the Southern Hemisphere have seasons that are directly opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere.
