my 1990 2.5 pontiac grand am is pumping oil out on the floor when I turn the engine over(try to start it) & also backfiring through the carb hard when it does try to start: where do I start looking ?
If its pooring out oil when you turn it over check your oil bolts they may be loose.. Go threw everything make sure it all looks right and maybe clean out your carb and check your gas fliter it may be blocked or shoot particles into your carb to cause problems.

First thing you will want to do is identify where the leak is coming from. From what your saying, it sounds like somthing severe. Is the oil leaking constantly when the car is sitting or is it only when you turn over the engine? Check the oil pan, the pcv valve and the valve cover. From what your saying it seams like alot of oil is coming out when you try to start the car. I would think it would be fairly obivious where the oil is coming from if it's such a huge leak, just have a look under the hood while a friend tries to start the car. Backfiring could be cause by a wide range of things including bad timing chains and the such. Fix the oil problem first, thats more severe.
