3x + y = 16

3x-3x + y = 16-3x

y = 16-3x

3x - y = 8

3x - (16-3x) = 8

3x - 16+3x = 8

6x-16=8

6x-16+16=8+16

6x=24

6x/6=24/6

x=4

y = 16-3x

y = 16-3(4)

y = 16-12=4
