x - 5y = - 16
x - 5y+5y = - 16+5y
x=- 16+5y
3x + 5y = - 8
3(- 16+5y) + 5y = - 8
3(- 16) (3)(+5y) + 5y = - 8
-48+15y+5y=-8
-48+20y=-8
-48+20y+48=-8+48
20y=40
20y/20=40/20
y=2
