Factors that led to the decline of the Puritan religion include the fact that the drive for economic success competed with Puritan ideas, the increasing competition from other religious groups, and political changes. Political changes became an issue after the 1691 Royal Charter for Massachusetts granted religious freedom for all Protestants (not just Puritans) and voting priviledges based on land ownership rather than church membership.
