Adam Smith believed that liberty meant freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the freedom to earn a living. In addition, he believed that liberty afforded citizens the freedom from burdensome taxes and trade restrictions, freedom from excessive government regulations, and the freedom to own and use property to create new businesses.
