How did the South's plantation economy influence who became leaders in the region?

The plantation economy, specifically slave labor, allowed wealthy planters to become even wealthier. Over time, the powerful planter class also took over politics. According to the text, a foreign visitor once noted that the planters "think and act precisely as do the nobility in other countries."
