How did King James II weaken self-government in the colonies?

King James II was determined to rule both England and the colonies with complete authority. He combined the colonies into the Dominion of New England, and he set Edmund Andros up as the royal governor. Assemblies were also outlawed and town meeting were limited to one per year.
