Where did Nat Turner live?

The Turner Mill is the plantation where Nat grew into manhood. Here he was taught to read by the Turner family, and later, as a carpentry apprentice, he became useful and valued for his work at the mill.

The dismal swamp was the vast, wild wetland, where Nat and his men hid out after the insurrection. Food, water, and hiding places were in abundance in the swamp, and Nat believed that his men would be able to hide out there for as long as it took for the heat to die down, before eventually making their way up North to freedom.
