why was the peckham murder case regarded as an 'open and shut case'?

In the Case for the Defence, by Graham Greene, the Peckham murder case at first seems like an open and shut case. This is because there was a murder weapon and witnesses. But, when a twin brother is produced as well as other evidence, it moves away from the open and shut case.
