Why did the men leave, and how did they come to be heading to the new ranch?

George and Lennie didn't merely leave Weed, they ran. Lennie was accused of trying to rape a young woman, thus, they had to leave and leave quickly. Note, Lennie did not rape the girl, he was simply emthralled by the material of her dress. It was soft.
