Who is Zebulon Pike from Letters of a Woman Homesteader and what is their importance?

Zebulon Pike is a Southern man from Yell County, Arkansas. He grew up during the Civil War and has a thick southern accident. Pike is described as very old, and he still maintains his own ranch. He is an endearing character in the book because of his love for animals and his attachment to his first love.
