William H. Seward is an historical character, who was the U.S. Senator from New York and presumed Republican candidate for the Presidency in 1860. Flashman meets Seward through detective Allan Pinkerton, who has asked Flashy to enlist with John Brown in order to slow him down and prevent a raid that might precipitate a civil war. Seward is described as a slight, brisk, blue-eyed, heavily eyebrowed man with a husky voice. Flashy is not impressed by Seward until he disarms with flattery.
