Will Shepard is only six when his mother leaves the family and his father commits suicide. Too young to understand the complicated relationship between his parents, Will feels to blame for his father's death and as though he will end up the same way. Will is then shipped off to England, where he feels like an outsider in a world he does not understand. Will's only solace is football, as soccer is known in England. Will puts all his effort into his football career, but soon becomes spoiled by his success.
