Wesley "Bad Boy" Boone is the first to "perform" at Open Mike Fridays, where he introduces his friends to poetry. Wesley has a lot of potential but he doesn't like doing his work. He is loyal and looks out for his friends.

When Mr. Ward assigns his students as essay on the Harlem Renaissance, Wesley chooses not to do the homework. He does, however, write a tribute poem about Hughes. Mr. Ward then surprises Wesley by asking him to read his poem to the class. Initially afraid that his friends will laugh at him, Wesley is shocked to find that they do not. His poem, in fact, inspires others to write their own.
