Who is Walter from The Vintage Book of Contemporary American Short Stories and what is their importance?

Walter is the protagonist in the story, All the Way in Flagstaff, Arizona. He is described as an imperfect man, who is an alcoholic. Although, Walter loves his family and spends a lot of time with them, his drinking problem causes problems in his marriage. In the end, his wife leaves him.
