Wally Wronken dreams of becoming a successful playwright and works steadfastly toward his dream. He and Marjorie meet when he is a stagehand at South Wind, and he immediately falls in love with her. Wally re-appears in Marjorie's life throughout the novel, but she does not return his obvious adoration. Ultimately, Wally becomes a great success, with a four-year play on Broadway and another in the works. Years later, he comes to realize that although Marjorie remains a woman, she is, in fact, ordinary...... no longer the vision he once idolized.
