Born in Moscow on October 29, 1927, Volodya Slepak was Fanya and Solomon's son. His given name was Vladimir, but his family called him Volodya. He was named after Vladimir Lenin. Volodya had a happy childhood, specialized in radio electronics in school, and had a difficult time getting a job due to his Jewish heritage. After witnessing the unfair treatment of Jews, he turned his back on the Communist Party. Volodya and Masha applied for visas to exit the country, which made them enemies of the country. The couple was denied exit visas for seventeen years, and Volodya was imprisoned many times for his protests. One demonstration caused him to be exiled to Siberia for five years.
