Born in 1893, Victor Gollancz was an Orthodox Jew. He married a woman named Ruth, who was an educated woman. Gollancz attended New College, Oxford and graduated with a First in Classics. He went onto teach at Repton, and he later became a publisher at Benn Brothers. When Benn Brothers refuses him a partnership, he established his own firm. Gollancz was a staunch supporter of the Communist Party until 1938. He died in 1967.
