Victor Gollancz was born in 1893 to an Orthodox Jewish family in England. He was married to Ruth who was also an educated woman. Gollancz attended New College, Oxford and graduated with a First in Classics. He taught at Repton. After a series of other jobs, he became a publisher at Benn Brothers. When they refused to make him a partner, he established his own firm. He supported the Communist Party until 1938. He died in 1967.
