Victor Bifelt was Anna's husband. He traveled to Alaska in search of gold and later became a trapper. When Victor warned his wife he would kill her mother's husband Ned over trapping rights, she warned him. As a result, Ned killed Victor, and Anna was required to testify at the trial, which was held hundreds of miles from home.
