Uncle Othy and Aunt Cordie Dagget take Jonas Crow in as their own after his parents' death. Aunt Cordie was Jayber's great-aunt, and she provided Jayber with the nurturing and care that was withdrawn when his parents died. Othy and Cordie had three children, though, none of them survived. The couple was especially good and loving to little Jonas Crow, and when they died within a few months of each other, Jayber was sent to the Good Shepherd orphanage.
