Uncle Othy and Aunt Cordie Dagget took little Jonas in as their own child when his parents died. Aunt Cordie was Jayber's great-aunt, and she provided him with the nurturing and care that he so abruptly lost when his parents died. When Othy and Cordie died, Jayber had nowhere to go but the Good Shepherd orphanage.
