Uncle Hung was Andrew's mother's brother. At the last minute, he decided to stay behind in Vietnam with Grandma Le, while the rest of the family escaped the country. When Andrew later returned to Saigon, he shared a room with his uncle, and the two often went out together. Hung video taped wedding for a living, and he is described as a plump man who liked to laugh and drink. Over the course of the novel, we learn that Uncle Hung's wife and daughter had moved to Virginia.
