Who is Tom Rivers from Moccasin Trail and what is their importance?

Tom Rivers is a mountain man. He is well versed in the ways of the wilderness and becomes fast friends with Jim, who he takes under his wing. Tom is with Jim when the letter arrives from Jim's brother, and he understands Jim's need to find his family. In the end, Tom travels a great distance in order to visit with Jim and his family in their new home.
