Thomas Ballard was a lawyer, who was later elevated to the position of Supreme Court Judge. He is married to Mary, and the couple have two daughters, Thomasina and Eliza. When his wife and daughter make Thomasina unhappy because of her choice of husband, Thomas steps in. After the Civil War, Thomas is forced to reopen his law practice because of the economic crash that followed on its heels. In the end, he dies at work, leaving his home to his two daughters.
