At the start of the novel, Homer witnesses Spangler paying for a young man's "send money so I can come home" telegram. This is one of his first lessons in compassion. Later in the novel, Homer is absent when the same young man returns desperate for money and attempts to rob the telegraph office at gunpoint. Once again exhibiting profound compassion, Spangler talks the young man out of his plan and offers him support.
