The Young Maiden is Saskia's mother. She falls in love with the tailor, and the couple proceeds to carry on a secret relationship. She is certain her father will allow them to marry..... at least until the miller makes a proposition for her hand. After the tailor is injured, the young maiden agrees to marry the miller, as she is pregnant with the tailor's child. The tailor, now deformed, repulses her.
