The Tokugawa Shogunate served as Japan's ruling body from 1603 to 1868. Their rule was responsible for the country's feudal practices. The group supported establishing a treaty with the Americans because they saw the danger American technology, which was superior to their own. Emperor Komei and others in the Samurai Class, however, believed that allowing foreigners on Japanese soil would bring down the wrath of the gods. Over time, the Shogunate prevailed but was significantly weakened. Their eventual fall marked the beginning of Japan's Meiji period.
