Thomas Jefferson founded the Democratic-Republicans, which was the first opposition party to the Federalists. This Party dominated United States politics from 1800 to 1824. Jefferson's party supported good relations with France, free trade, strict readings of the Constitution, and it was opposed to the central bank.
