Sack's aunt visits him shortly after his surgery in London. She is never named, but he notes the way she listens to his story and concerns without a great deal of response. After giving him a bit of advice, his aunt goes onto tell him some of the dirtiest jokes he'd ever heard. He then notes that her warmth, compassion, and humor were extremely, supportive influences on his emotional recovery.
