Susan Stringham is an American widow, whose husband's death has left her without fund. In order to support herself, she writes magazine articles. When Susan meets Milly, the two women develop a close friendship and agree to travel to Europe together. Susan, as the older member of the friendship, sees her new purpose in life, as caring for and protecting Milly. She is portrayed as sincere, caring, and loyal. After Milly's death, Susan returns to America. She does, however, maintains contact with Maud Lowder through letters.
