Special Agent Pendergast is a mysterious FBI agent that the reader knows nothing about in the beginning and learns little about during the development of the plot. Special Agent Pendergast appears at the museum in the middle of the novel after the murder of the security guard, the third known murder to have taken place within the museum. Pendergast proves helpful in the investigation, befriending the lead detective on the case, Lt. D'Agosta. Eventually Pendergast is removed from the case by the local FBI office because he wants to shut down the Superstition Exhibit's opening night party. However, Pendergast insists this gives him more time for his own investigation and he goes in search of the creature in the basement.
