Sophie, Penelope's mother, was the daughter of a friend of Lawrence's. After she lost her family in the war, she went to find Lawrence on the promise that he would always protect her. She falls in love with him and has Penelope by him. She rarely leaves his side until she visits London to break from the tedium during World War II and she is killed during the Blitz at this time. Before her death, she urges Penelope to only marry Ambrose if she truly loves him and it is the only time in her life that Penelope does not listen to her mother and respect her advice.
