Socrates is the founder of moral and political philosophy, as well as Plato's teacher and mentor. He was well known in Athens for questioning the most strongly held beliefs of the city's important citizens. He was later arrested, tried for treason, and sentenced to death. Socrates was made to take his own life by drinking hemlock.
