Shardik, also called Mir, is a bear/robot created by the North Central Positronics, LTD. Roland identifies this bear as one of the Twelve Guardians created by the Great Old Ones to Guard one of the Twelve Portals. Roland suspects that the bear is several hundred or perhaps thousands of years old. At the time when Roland, Susannah and Eddie encounter the bear, it is infested with worms and is showing signs of insanity. Susannah kills this bear by shooting it in the radar dish or antenna that grows from its head.
