John Marston Moore was a twenty-two-year-old officer candidate who was present in Marine Boot Camp when his linguistic abilities and association with Japanese culture drew the attention of Pickering and his staff. He was pulled from Boot Camp and immediately sent to join Detachment 14 in the South Pacific. Originally destined for the Coastwatcher Establishment, he was kept with Hon because of abilities to translate Japanese. Moore's importance as an intelligence worker were further increased when he was sent to Guadalcanal, where he interpreted valuable data regarding the Japanese force on the other side of the island. He was sent on patrol and wounded, but rescued soon after.
