Sgt. Byrd is one of the soldiers that frequents the rec center. He always has a camera with him, and often leaves the post to shoot pictures. Sgt. Byrd teaches Jamie how to develop film, but he also teaches her war lingo.
The sergeant is nice but he also tends to keep to himself. He seems to be suffering a case of post-traumatic stress disorder because his eyes glaze over sometimes when he is talking about the war or looking at pictures of the war.
