Sergeant Patrick Murphy O'Shaughnessy is a member of the NYPD. Falsely accused of bribery about five years before the novel begins, O'Shaughnessy though vindicated, is no longer trusted. Over the course of the novel, he is assigned as Pendergast's NYPD liaison officer, and although he believes the assignment is a punishment, he becomes thoroughly embroiled in helping to solve it. In the end, he is kidnapped and murdered by the copycat killer.
