Schorner is an SS officer and decorated war veteran. He is also a drunk. Schorner, however, quits drinking after he takes a liking to a young Jewish woman, named Rachel. He specifically requests her as a lover shortly after her husband is killed by the camp overseer. Schorner genuinely cares for Rachel and does what he can for both Rachel and her children.
