Sarah Kemble Knight is a resourceful woman living in Boston in the 17th and early 18th Centuries. She is the widow of a successful sea merchant who has become self-reliant owing to her husband's frequent absences at sea. She has a daughter who is 15 in 1704, when Madam Knight undertakes a journey from Boston to New Haven and from there on to New York and back.
