Sara Roosevelt, Franklin's mother, was very dependent upon her son after the death of her husband. She approved of Eleanor, but made the couple keep their engagement a secret for a year to make sure they were doing the right thing..... that they shared a true and lasting love. Sara served as the matriarch of the Roosevelt home for many years, dominating Eleanor and overseeing the running of her household.
