Sam Panda is Aubrey's illegitimate son, a recurring minor character in numerous previous novels in the series of novels. Sam is described as the spitting image of a younger Aubrey, though less corpulent, larger, stronger, and of course ebony black, as was his mother. Sam is exceptionally well-educated and intelligent but does not know much about the sea. In many respects, Sam represents what Aubrey could have become if not a naval man. Sam is also a Callao local religious leader of sorts, and a priest in the Catholic faith.
