Srinivasa Ramanujan Iyengar (1887-1920) spent most of his life in southern India. He acquired a keen interest in mathematics as a young boy, and as a result, had little interest in other subjects in school. He never earned a college degree, but through his interactions with other Indian mathematicians, he was able to publish several papers and get a job as a clerk. During this period, he wrote to several prominent English mathematicians, G.H. Hardy took an interest and eventually convinced Ramanujan to come to Cambridge where he could continue his research. Ramanujan spent several years at Cambridge with Hardy, where he clarified and published work from his notebooks. Ramanujan is regarded by many as one of the greatest mathematicians of all time.
