Rutherford B. Hayes was nominated to run for president on the Republican ticket in 1876. His opponent was the Democratic nominee Samuel Tilden. Hayes won the presidency, but only after a protracted battle over contested elections in Florida, South Carolina and Louisiana. After he took office, Hayes immediately issued orders for the last of the federal troops in the South to stand down, signaling the end of Reconstruction.
