Roy Lee Cooke is Sonny's best friend and founding member of the rocket boys. Roy Lee's father died in the mine. Because his brother works in the mine, Roy Lee and his mother and brother are allowed to stay in their house. Roy Lee has a more worldly life view than Sonny and tries to warn him to wise up about Dorothy. Roy Lee also teaches Sonny and the rocket boys "the ropes" about girls, with the idea that they can get girlfriends. One afternoon he pulls out a bra so the boys can practice the one-handed unhook the bra move, until they are all successful. Because Roy Lee has a car, he is charge of transportation for the BCMA. Roy Lee knows the town moonshiner, John Eye, a former miner, who lost a foot in the mine and so is allowed to hang around town, and sell moonshine to locals. Roy Lee has a car and drives the boys up to the little shack where they can buy some shine. John Eye provides the boys with the alcohol needed for their special propellant they call "Zincoshine" and they all have their first drinks. After graduating high school with his friends, Roy Lee goes to college and then becomes a banker.
