Rose is a young woman when her mother is killed by a lorry truck, and after her mother's death, she sets out to redo the home she shares with her father in her own style. She also breaks off her engagement, refuses her father's offer to quit work, and wants to establish financial independence.

When a bombing destroys their home, Rose is forced to move. She gets involved with a young man named Jimmie, whose intelligence makes her feel inadequate, so she beging to broaden her world by reading. While reading a newspaper article, Rose encounters a description of "the other woman" and realizes that she, in fact, is playing that role in Jimmie's life.
