Rog Rogaway is a painter. He supports himself on a small disability pension and lives in an old, abandoned schoolhouse near Krenkel Corners. Rog paints two to three canvases a day, and when he runs out of canvas, he reuses the older ones. He avoids his wife and children by painting in a studio he builds himself. Rogaway relaxes with wine, music, and dancing. In his search for a warmer climate, Rog spends time in Mexico, Majorca, southern France, Portugal, and Taos after leaving Big Sur.
