The love of Penelope's life, Richard is an American who is stationed in Porthkerris during World War II. He originally meets Penelope and her father Lawrence when they are in the museum one afternoon. He is an art fan and had hoped to meet Lawrence when he heard he was to be stationed in Porthkerris. Lawrence is happy to have new company and invites Richard back to their house. Over time, however, Richard becomes more interested in Penelope, falling madly in love with her. He becomes the husband that Penelope should have had and the son that Lawrence sees him to be.
