Richard Macklin is a graduate of the US Naval Academy at Annapolis and a career Marine. He had graduated from Parachute School in Lakewood, New Jersey but took part in the invasion of Gavutu as a member of the infantry. He was injured before ever reaching shore. He had met Jake Dillon at Lakewood and again at the Army Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Dillon had sent for him to take part in the War Bond tour.
